Retinal photo of a diabetic showing exudates and haemorrhages in the retina
Diabetes affects the small retinal vessels which carry less oxygen than normal. The retinal arteries in long standing cases of diabetes leak lipids and protein and blood into the retina. This leads to a condition called diabetic retinopathy. This needs to be intensively managed. Advanced cases of diabetic retinopathy lose vision. All diabetics must have periodic eye checkup including examination of retina. Early diabetic retinopathy might just be followed up. Lasers are used to prevent complications. Surgery is required in advanced cases. Unless the biochemical parameters such as blood sugar or blood urea and creatine are adequately controlled, diabetic eye disease have disappointing result after eye treatment.
