Macular Degeneration

Retinal Photo of Macular degeration

Macular Degeration generally develops in the elderly and affects the part of the retina called macula which is used for reading. Reading vision and doing fine work is impaired. One eye is usually affected and the second eye may or may not follow. The exact cause is not known. In one type called "wet macular degeneration " new vessels appear in the retina which then bleed and block vision. The other type is the dry degeneration which has nodules in the retina. The wet type can be controlled to some extent by using the new generation of anti VGEF drugs called Avastin , Lucentis or Macugen. Multiple injections are needed and cost is a factor. In the dry type anti oxidant medication taken for over one year help. Low vision aids such as magnifying glasses, telescopes fitted to the spectacle or electronic reading devices can be of help.
