Myth: A child of 11 year whose minus power is increasing at - 0.5 Dsph every 6 month will end up with more than -30 Dsph by the time he reaches 30 !
Truth: Minus powers might increase during the growth spurt of puberty but plaetues by the age of 18 years in most cases
Myth: Glaucoma is blinding in all cases!
Truth: In modern ophthalmology diagnosed glaucomas are nearly always prevented from losing vision by using the appropriate drugs or surgery and regular followups with eye care professionals.
Myth : Cataract can be prevented by taking drugs !
Truth : Only some of the secondary cataract
due to diseases of eyes or drugs can be presevented in some cases.
As per todays scientific knowledge the
cataract coming with age cannot be prevented by any drugs .
Myth : Diabetic patients do not need an eye checkup till they have visual symptoms !
Truth : Diabetic patients must have an annual eye checkup. This can help detect early involvement of the eyes. At that stage a rigorous control of diabetes and preventive actions such as laser photocoagulation of the retina might help to prevent severe visual loss later .
Myth : Squint in a child should wait till they grow up.
Truth : Generally speaking squints in children should be corrected before they start their school in order to save them the psychological trauma from peer group comments. Moreover, some squint treatments must be started early in order to recover poorly developed vision from lazy eyes due to squint.
