In retinal detachment the two layers
of the
retina split and fluid comes into the area.
In the common "rhegmatogenous retinal detachment" there is usually a
break in the inner layer of the retina.
In early cases patients might see increased floaters or flashes. Next
only one portion of the vision may be affected
appearing like a curtain from top or from bottom. Later the central
vision is affected. It is generally a painless condition.
Exact causes are not known but patients with high
myopia,
patients
following trauma or
those with other diseases of eye are more predisposed. Its treatment is
surgical.
Very early cases may be treated by laser photocoagulation of the
retinal hole or tear or cryo application only.
Later on the surgeon might choose various invasive surgical
options.
As a precautionary measure the other eye is thoroughly checked for
retinal breaks which might lead to detachment.
They are sealed. The high risk group such
as high myopes or those following trauma must have routine
checkups
to detect the need for prophylaxis.
