Thirty Years of Athena Eye Care...

As the clinic enters its thirtieth year of service, we at Athena Eye Care look back in awe at the huge strides which ophthalmology has made in this period. What was then an exotic or a highly specialized investigation or surgery accessible to a very few and available at select locations is now easily available to most. That is the face of the development – just the way the big computer filling up a huge room thirty years ago, today fits into your wristwatch.

We, at Athena Eye Care, strive to deliver state of the art treatment while retaining a personal touch. In a world where medical treatment is becoming increasingly impersonal in large corporate hospitals, we try to know and treat each of our patients with individualized care. We still try to personally explain the disease condition to the patient and discuss the various treatment options available to them.

Over the last 30 years, we are privileged to have with us families sometimes for as long as for four generations, all of whose medical history files are still maintained by us.

Athena Eye Care has a special focus on pediatric ophthalmology and is an extremely child friendly clinic. We strive to put the little ones at ease and take away the fear of a doctor’s visit. We have two trained service dogs who are a major attraction for the children. It gives us great pleasure to see those, who came in as children 30 years ago, now come in as parents with their children.

The internet, coupled with the painstakingly maintained medical records at Athena Eye Care, has come as a boon to our old patients. For many minor eye ailments, only a well shot photo of the eye and the description of the complaints over WhatsApp or email can elicits a quick complimentary reply. This was extremely useful during the covid lockdown days and is still a big help for minor follow ups and for elderly patients with mobility issues.

What is the challenge ahead? As life expectancy increases and lifestyles change, the eye problems of yesteryears take different forms. Disabling degenerations in the eye of the elderly, problems associated with increasing computer use, stress induced disorders and complications of diabetes brought about by high calorie diets and sedentary lifestyle now pose a challenge to us.
